A former rebel Gustavo Petro wins Colombia's presidential election.

A former rebel Gustavo Petro narrowly won a runoff vote over an unpopular millionaire on Sunday.

Petro senator, who was attempting his third time to become president was able to secure 50.48 percent from the vote.

Real property business magnate Rodolfo Hernandez had 47.26% of the votes.

Petro's victory highlighted a radical shift in the presidential political landscape of the nation.

Petro himself was an agitator with the now defunct M-19 movement. He was later granted amnesty following his imprisonment for his involvement with group.

"Today is a day of celebration for the people. Let them celebrate the first popular victory," Petro tweeted.

Petro called to unify during his speech to celebrate his victory.
