A stunning late surge by Cameron Smith saw the Australian take home his first major victory.
In his first appearance in the event the 28-year-old made 5 consecutive birdies.
After beginning the day four shots clear over Smith, Rory McIlroy finished with two strokes in the third spot after registering a 70 without bogey.
It brought heartbreak to the Northern Irishman seeking to end the eight-year drought, was unable to do so.
"To win an Open Championship in itself is probably going to be a golfer's highlight in their career," Smith said to reporters.
"To do it around St Andrews is just unbelievable. This place is so cool. I love the golf course. I love the town." He added.
